What is an Almshouse Charity?

What is an Almshouse?

An almshouse is a home - usually a house or flat - owned by a charity and provided exclusively to meet the charity’s purposes, such as supporting those in financial need or with infirmity. Residents occupy the property under a licence as qualified beneficiaries.

What is an Almshouse Charity?

An almshouse charity is a charity set up to provide one or more almshouses to further its charitable purposes. Typically, these charities aim to relieve financial hardship by offering housing and related services, with the main benefit being the right to live in accommodation they own.

Common Features of Almshouse Charities

Almshouse charities often have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Origins in private gifts given for the relief of poverty.
  • Weekly maintenance contributions from beneficiaries, set at a level that does not cause hardship.
  • Community considerations, where residents are expected to respect the needs of others.
  • Permanent endowment, ensuring a portion of the housing is secured long-term.
  • Restricted eligibility, either by beneficiary group or geographic area.
